The Swiss Government, through the Federal commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), awards various postgraduate scholarships to foreign scholars and researchers. The scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland at one of the public funded university or recognized institution.
The "International Short Visits" of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) allow for researchers working in Switzerland to go abroad or for researchers from elsewhere to come to Switzerland. The main aim of this funding instrument is to build or consolidate international collaborations by carrying out joint research activities during the visit (between a host and a guest). The submission of an application is possible at any time, but must be deposited at least two months before the grant is due to start.
Student exchange grants allow Swiss students to go to South Africa for research purposes and vice versa to invite South African students to come to Switzerland. Faculty exchange grants can be used to support fellowship programmes. Both established scientists and early-stage researchers (including PhD students) are targeted. Faculty or student exchange applications can be handed in on a rolling basis.
