U.S. national academies find biotech crops not harmful to human health and the environment. They conclude that foods from GE crops are as safe as foods from non-GE crops and and that the U.S. regulatory system needs to assess crop varieties based on their individual characteristics, not the way they are produced.

Forscher wollen das Nördliche Breitmaulnashorn retten

Im Dezember 2015 versammelte sich eine internationale Gruppe von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern in Wien, um das drohende Aussterben des Nördlichen Breitmaulnashorns zu diskutieren und Möglichkeiten zu erörtern, wie dies verhindert werden kann. Die Ideen und Pläne dieses historischen Treffens erscheinen nun im internationalen Fachmagazin Zoo Biology. Die Veröffentlichung ist Teil der fortlaufenden Bemühungen, auf die Aussterbenskrise aufmerksam zu machen, welche die Nashörner und viele andere Arten bedroht. Ziel ist es, vor allem die Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft zu erreichen und so den Austausch und das Sammeln von Informationen voranzubringen.

20th Anniversary of the Global Commercialization of Biotech Crops (1996-2015) and Biotech Crop Highlights in 2015

The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) released its annual report detailing the adoption of biotech crops, showcasing the global increase in biotech hectarage from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 179.7 million hectares in 2015. This 100-fold increase in just 20 years makes biotechnology the fastest adopted crop technology in recent times, reflecting farmer satisfaction with biotech crops.

Biotech breakthrough: Sunlight can be used to produce chemicals and energy

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have discovered a natural process they describe as reverse photosynthesis. In the process, the energy in solar rays breaks down, rather than builds plant material, as is the case with photosynthesis. The sunlight is collected by chlorophyll, the same molecule as used in photosynthesis. Combined with a specific enzyme the energy of sunlight now breaks down plant biomass, with possible uses as chemicals, biofuels or other products, that might otherwise take a long time to produce. By increasing production speed while reducing pollution, the discovery has the potential to revolutionize industrial production. The research results have now been published in Nature Communications.

A 10-generation feeding trial with GM ingredients finds no negative impact on Japanese quails

In a long-term experiment over 10 generations, researchers investigated if herbicide-tolerant GM soya or Bt-GM corn negatively affects Japanese quails. Even though some differences were found among the feeding groups, the authors conclude that none could be judged as a negative influence on the birds or final consumer products.
